It’s important to book the correct mobility option to ensure the right type of transport is provided.
Below are descriptions of each mobility option. They include requirements, potential vehicle types, and other relevant details.
Walker
Mobility Code: WLK
Description
The patient requires transport and can walk with little to no assistance using a walker.
Mobility of patient
The patient can walk with minimal support using a walker. A staff member may assist with boarding the vehicle if needed.
Other information
If there are steps or no ramp access, the patient may need minor help navigating these. Drivers should ensure the patient’s safety and assist in transferring them to the relevant department, taking into account their ability to walk with a walker.
What could arrive
A transport vehicle with enough space and facilities to accommodate a patient using a walker.
Mobility read back
The patient will be transported in a vehicle suited for a walker, with minimal assistance needed for walking.
Wheelchair (Assistance of One)
Mobility Code: WC1
Description
The patient requires transport while using a wheelchair.
Mobility of patient
The patient will remain seated in their wheelchair throughout the journey. A staff member may assist with boarding and securing the wheelchair in the vehicle.
Other information
If the property has steps or lacks ramp access, the patient may need help navigating these while seated in the wheelchair. Drivers must ensure the patient’s safety and help with the transfer to the relevant department, considering their wheelchair use.

A stretcher ambulance with enough space and facilities, staffed by two crew members to ensure safe transport.

Bariatric (Double Crew)

Description
The patient needs transport with the help of two full crews. This is often for bariatric patients or those requiring extra assistance.

The vehicle must have enough space, specialised equipment, and trained staff to manage patients requiring this level of assistance. Drivers must work closely with the crew to ensure a safe and smooth transfer.
